Adam Taylor resigned from the city commission effective July 20, 2018. His departure created a vacancy, and how to fill a city commission vacancy is addressed in St. Marys City Code, Article 2, Section 1-204 as seen below:
At the July 17, 2018 city commission meeting Commissioner Awerkamp announced that he was going to seek appointment to the vacant seat. He submitted the following letter to the city commission:
At the August 7, 2018 city commission meeting Francis Awerkamp was appointed to the seat formerly held by Adam Taylor on a 3-0 vote, with Awerkamp Abstaining. His appointment created a new vacancy, as Awerkamp gave up his seat to accept Taylor's.
Awerkamp removed himself from the City Commission to wait to be sworn-in.
Awerkamp's vacated seat is also subject to St. Marys City Code, Article 2, Section 1-204 as seen above.
The three remaining commissioners then appointed John-Paul Rutledge on a 3-0 vote with Commissioner Murtha making the nomination and motion, and Murtha, Bryan, and Binsfeld voting in favor..
Awerkamp and Rutledge were sworn-in and the city commission reorganized with Joe Bryan being appointed Mayor, and Richard Binsfeld being appointed Vice-Mayor.
The new bathrooms in Riverside Park are open. However, this Fall the floors will get an epoxy coating (if that is the correct way to describe the process).
Also, the pool repair company just called to confirm the contact person that will let them into the swimming pool tomorrow, etc.
The next regular city commission meeting is on Tuesday, May 1st - a link to the city commission packet is: www.smks.info/uploads/2/7/3/7/27372311/050118ccpacket.pdf

City employees will be distributing a flyer regarding the power outage that has been scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2018. The flyer is below...
It has been confirmed that there will be an outage for the city's electrical customers on Saturday, March 24th, weather permitting. It is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and if everything goes as planned should take around 2 to 3 hours.
The Westar substation (pictured below) is being retired, and the city will begin taking its power directly from Westar. So, the purpose of the outage is to 'cut over' the power from the Westar substation to the city's substation.
Below is a picture of the ($620,000) improvements made to the city's substation.
The city of St. Marys has a cost-share program to assist individual property owners in making needed repairs to sidewalks located in medium-to-high pedestrian traffic areas, as determined by the City Commission. Here is a link to the city's program: http://www.smks.info/sidewalk.html
This is a reminder that there is a special city commission meeting tonight. The Tuesday, February 20th meeting was canceled due to the lack of a quorum. As a result, a special meeting was called for Tuesday, February 27th.
