The City of St. Marys has operated a transfer station since June 3, 1974; prior to that the city simply burned its trash. The State Board of Health (in complying with Federal regulations) gave the city until July 1, 1974, to cease all open burning, with the exception of tree limbs and grass cuttings. (To continue open burning of tree limbs and grass the city needed to apply for an exemption every year, but the exemption is now continuous, subject to periodic inspection.)

The transfer station consists of a composting operation and open burn site that serves 976 customers (813 residential, 104 commercial, 6 rural commercial, 28 six-month rural permits, and 25 rural residential.) During an average year the city will make approximately 290 trips (1,750 tons of waste) to Waste Management’s dumpsite (Rolling Meadows) near Topeka. During preparation of the 2007 Budget, the City Commission mandated that the city’s refuse operation be removed from the General Fund and established as an enterprise fund (Ordinance #1180).

Two full-time refuse workers pick up trash along 5 different routes throughout the week from 7 am to 4 pm Monday – Friday. The transfer station is staffed with part-time employees and is open year-round Monday – Friday, 8 am to 5 pm (closed for lunch), and Saturday 9 am to 3 pm. A new trash truck was purchased in 2016 for $80,861; the department also uses (4) four 40 cubic yard refuse containers (approximately $6,000 each) to haul the refuse to Rolling Meadows. The truck used with the containers is a 1995 MACK roll off truck.
