SMPD is trying a new initiative we're calling "Community Range Day." It's free to those who can attend; it's put together with SMPD officers who volunteer their time and funded through community donations.
We keep the classes small, about 8-10 so that we can better mentor and give one-on-one to the participants. We would prioritize applicants to those who reside within the city and surrounding township.
The idea for this came from many of you who reached out to me, wanting to know what you could do to help or volunteer for the police department. It's been very humbling for me to share so many ideas and honest discussions for the common goal of working together toward community safety.
We determined the Community Range Day was the most practical and most straightforward event that we could organize for a police department of our size. The purpose of CRD is not for "Warrior" gun owners; it's for the Joe and Jane citizen who have questions on self-defense, want to be able to learn how to be more proficient with their firearms, and meet with members of their local police department.
** No Community Range Days are scheduled for the future at this time ***
Any upcoming community range days will be posted on our police department facebook page.
Those interested must complete the attached forms and return them via fax, email, or drop off at city hall, making sure to make a note of which of the two days they're available. If they're accepted, they will be emailed with a confirmation and further instructions. As I know privacy with information is a common concern, completed applications are used only for this local event, are not stored in any way, and are destroyed after use.
