Each summer the Street Department repairs the cuts the utility department has made to the streets over the winter to fix water and sewer leaks. The town has been broken into four sections: 1) Everything south of Bertrand Ave., 2) Everything north of Bertrand Ave and west of Hwy 63, 3) All of Lakeview subdivision, and 4) Everything north of Bertrand Ave and east of Hwy 63. After the utility cuts are repaired, the bad spots are patched in the section of town that is going to be sealed. The streets are sealed using MC-800 oil and aggregate. It takes approximately 250 gallons of oil and 30 tons of sand per block. There are 16 miles of paved streets, 0.2 miles of unpaved streets, 1.6 miles of paved alleys, and 1.9 miles of unpaved alleys. (Most side streets in town are only ½ inch thick asphalt on top of gravel.)
The Department also maintains portions US-24 and KS-63 within the city. These roadways are referred to as 'connecting links.'
